Monday, February 11th, 2008

Wow. Whoa. What a night!

It was our pleasure at Rebolusyon Rekords and Rakrakan to be part of the 1st Bluesfest. It felt good to be involved in a blues music show in Manila after taking the Blueskrieg train up south and north of Luzon…

Kudos to Andy and The Blue Rats for starting the Bluesfest. Hats off to Pidoy and the hobbits for handling the massive surge of people. Big shoutout to the following:

- the bands Soul Benders, Plug, Kulukati, Snakecharmer (welcome back), The Blue Rats, Jun Lopito and Diamond Dogs, Mr Crayon and Alex of Hukkah
- RJ UR 105.9 for the radio plugs
- Pidoy and Hobbit House crew
- Howlin Dave for the energetic emceeing
- Direk for running a tight show
- Jonathan for the video coverage
- and May for ensuring that everybody got paid, hehehe.

What a fantastic evening of soulful blues and rock n roll. Sa uulitin.

SNAKECHARMER

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Snakecharmer band members are Jason Quibilan on vocals and blues harp, Zann Pacificador on electric guitars, Ruben Flores on slide guitars, Mich Regalado on bass guitar, Ronneil Guba on keyboards and Monmon Lopez on drums.

Snakecharmer

Why the name SNAKECHARMER?

If you look at our profile, it would say “they aim to cast a spell on their audiences…” But when the band was formed 3+ years ago nobody was actually really thinking that hard about it. - Ruben

Romeo Lee actually suggested “Snakecharms” would be a better name. - Zann

SnakeCharmer’s musical influences are?

A good chunk of the band are Black Crowes addicts, but influences also include The Allman Brothers Band, Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, (earlier) U2, John Lee Hooker…. - Ruben

The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal! Neil, our keyboardist, is heavily influenced by the theme to “Baywatch” - Zann

Why is SNAKECHARMER into blues music?

No technical skill required, you just have to love it! Give it the respect it’s due and it’s actually very forgiving. - Ruben

Natripan lang talaga. Noong una akala ko kasi dahil mas konting guitar pedals lang kailangan, mas tipid. Yun pala, mas mapapagastos ka sa magandang pang-blues na amp! - Zann

What are your thoughts on the blues music scene in the Philippines?

Right now, very exciting! Or maybe it’s just because we feel we have a tiny bit part in it. But it still doesn’t get the exposure it deserves. Actually nakakasawa na mukha ng other Blueskrieg bands. Huwahahahaha!!! Biro lang, actually miss ko na sila ulit kasi dami namin absent lately. - Ruben

Hirap “sumali” sa blues scene… kasi hindi naman kami blues band. Marami din kasing “blues snobs” or “purists” who frown upon this thing we do which is really a bastardized version of the blues. Eh hirap din sumali sa rock scene, masyado naman daw kami bluesy to be a rock band. Eh ano ba talaga kuya… Zann

Where can blues music fans watch SNAKECHARMER play? Snakecharmer plays regularly at Mag:net Katipunan, Gweilos Eastwood and 70s Bistro.

We used to play at Conspiracy, and we’d usually attract the brgy. tanods. Maybe they like our sets… but they also kept telling us to turn it down while flashing their batons… so we’re not really sure… - Zann

How did SNAKECHARMER guys get together?

A bunch of high school friends started missing each other after college. Very gay. - Ruben

I was looking for a guitarist who could play back up to me, so I thought I’d give Ruben a chance… and maybe even be a mentor to him. - Zann

But it turned out… sige na nga. - Ruben

Is blues really the devil’s music?…

I think so. It is very hard to play bluesy stuff without a little bit of Satan in your heart… take it from AC/DC. When did we sell our soul? Actually everytime we grant a request to play “Roadhouse Blues” or “Hard to Handle”, I think we sell a little bit of our souls… hehe - Zann

teka, wala naman sa blues ang pera dito e. I think the devil’s busy buying souls elsewhere now… Ruben

Blueskrieg Launch Party a smashing affair

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

I would consider the BLUESKRIEG CD launch party last night (Saturday, November 25, 2006) a smashing blues music and Pinoy rock affair - great music, great bands, great vibes. Here we are with a CD of Pinoy blues songs and music - 11 years after the first and only BLUESKRIEG concert at Club Dredd in 1995 - this is a Pinoy blues music revolution - the soldiers are the brave Pinoy blues bands featured in the Blueskrieg CD - the battle is for the Filipinos hearts and minds - that the music will be appreciated and understood. At the launch party last night - it seems we won a handful of hearts and minds!

Thanks a lot to the following for making the evening a truly enjoyable blues night to remember
- the bands for a wonderful show; DAHON, SNAKECHARMER, KULUKATI, FIREBOTTLE and PLUG
- The BLUE RATS band for a great sounding, hard grooving set of classic blues songs
- all the people who came to support their bands/friends
- all the 22 people who bought their own copy of the BLUESKRIEG CD, maraming salamat po!

Click here for some photos of the Blueskrieg launch party.

We also have video footage of selected numbers - coming soon to a YouTube near you. ;)

We truly had a reason to celebrate last night - there was just so much time and work that went into the making of the BLUESKRIEG CD - from the recording sessions, harmonizing all the schedules of five different bands to the mixing sessions, to the mastering sessions, to the CD packaging and art design - a LOT OF WORK. Thanks to May Diwa for her all out support for this project. Thanks to all the guys at Sound Weavers who helped make it happen; Mon Reynera, Doff Sandigan, CJ Salonga. Thanks to Joric Maglanque for facilitating this project into such a quickstart from idea to reality.

Come the first week of December, the Blueskrieg CDs should be available in most major record stores like Odyssey, Tower Records and MusicOne. Tell your friends, tell your parents - they will surely find a lot of songs to like in the CD. And tell the kids - this is music for the soul. :D
Long live Pinoy blues music. Hats off to DAHON, FIREBOTTLE, KULUKATI, PLUG and SNAKECHARMER! You guys rock!

BLUESKRIEG - Original Pinoy Blues Music

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

The second record release of Rebolusyon Rekords is entitled BLUESKRIEG. It is now in the final mixing stage.

The CD cover design and packaging is also being finalized. The target in store release date is first week of December.
BLUESKRIEG is a compilation CD featuring five (5) Philippine bands playing blues-influenced/blues-based music, Original Pilipino Blues Music. The featured bands are (in alphabetical order) :

  • DAHON
  • FIREBOTTLE
  • KULUKATI
  • PLUG and
  • SNAKECHARMER

BLUESKRIEG contains fifteen (15) original songs that arguably cover the wide gamut of blues music varieties, from standard 12-bar blues, to soul/rnb tinged blues, to classic rock, southern rock, country rock style blues to modern heavy blues based rock…

There was an advanced listening party cum blues night gig at Conspiracy Bar last Nov. 4 - overall the reaction to the songs and mixes were quite positive - just a few enhancements, very few rough edges. Click here for commentary on the  performances that bluesy Saturday night in Quezon City.
The BLUESKRIEG term was coined by Gerry Diwa in 1995 for a blues night feature concert in Club Dredd, the hotspot for original music back in those days.

Watch out for the BLUESKRIEG CD and related activities. The launch party is on November 25, 2006 at 6Underground in Makati. All five (5) BLUESKRIEG bands will be there with special guests THE BLUE RATS. Watch out.
